There is a specific kind of chill that runs down your spine when you boot up a cartridge that shouldn’t exist. alien quest v1.01
I’m not talking about a prototype. I’m talking about a point-one patch from 1987. Last week, at a dusty flea market in Ohio, I found a loose gray cartridge with a peeling sticker that simply read: Alien Quest v1.01 .
If you ever see this cartridge in the wild, buy it. But don’t play it alone. And definitely don't play it after midnight. Stay retro
Here are the three things I discovered after plugging this cursed thing into my retro-rig.
If you know your gaming history, you know that Alien Quest (the official release) is a bog-standard run-and-gun. The v1.0 we all grew up with is fine—clunky, brown, but functional. But this? This is different. I’m talking about a point-one patch from 1987
This is where I stopped playing. In v1.01, your character has a "radio." In v1.0, it’s just for mission briefings. Here, if you stand still for 20 seconds, the radio picks up static. But slowly, under the static, you hear a voice. It isn't English. It isn't a monster growl. It sounds like a human being trying to speak backwards while underwater. I ran a spectrogram analysis on my capture footage. It formed a waveform that looked suspiciously like a topographical map of the developer’s hometown. Coincidence? Probably. But it freaked me out enough to pull the plug.
