Lan freezes. Because it’s true—she has been angry. After Minh died, she used to scream at Binh for crying too loud, for spilling fish sauce, for just being there . She once locked him in the storage closet for an hour. She’s never hit him, but she’s wanted to. The thought disgusts her. But Binh is insistent, pulling at her sleeve

Binh grabs it. “Mẹ, read to me.”

He shakes his head, crying. “He writes through me. He says you’re angry because of Ba. He says you want to hit me.”

“If you’re in bed and you hear a knock… It’s just a branch, or the old house’s shock. But if the knock comes three times slow… Then Mister Babadook wants to say hello.”
