The blue light of the smartphone screen was the only illumination in Mika’s cramped dorm room. It was 2:17 AM. Outside, the winter wind gnawed at the windowpanes, but inside, Mika was focused on one thing: the progress bar.

It showed her sleeping. Normal. Boring. Then, at 2:23 AM, her phone’s screen had flickered on by itself. The text “Do downloads continue in sleep mode?” appeared again, but this time, someone—or something—selected Pause .

She tapped it.

She opened the second. Same angle. At 2:31 AM, her phone’s flashlight turned on. The beam swept the room slowly, as if searching. Then it stopped on the dark corner by the door. The light flickered twice.

From the corner, two pinpricks of red light flickered back.

Two options. Pause. Continue.

Below it, the small gray text had changed.
