Zoom recordings of pandemic funerals. The Mars rovers’ panoramas, compressed and transmitted across interplanetary space. H264 did not just capture these moments — it them. The codec has become a low-level clock, counting frames at 23.976, 25, or 29.97 per second, outliving the hardware and software that once played it.
