It killed the "Ross & Rachel" engine and replaced it with a weird, sweaty, hilarious, and surprisingly sweet Monica & Chandler love story. It proved that Friends wasn't a one-trick pony. It could evolve.
Phoebe decides to seduce Chandler to force a confession. The result is a legendary game of chicken: "They don't know that we know they know we know." And then, the line that launched a thousand memes: "My eyes! My eyes!" When Monica finally admits it, the group cheers. The secret is out. But the show doesn’t backpedal. Instead of breaking them up, the writers double down. By the finale, Monica and Chandler are talking about marriage. Ross is in a coma (figuratively, after falling asleep at the wedding of a woman he just married to avoid deportation). And Rachel has finally stopped crying into her coffee cups.
