Klaus interrupts. "The system," he says, tapping his temple, "is a tool. Not a god. Primus tells you what a good shelf looks like. It doesn't tell you why a good shelf works."

Klaus crouches down. He pulls the sugar cereal from the bottom shelf and places it on the third shelf. Then, he takes the Dinkel-Basis muesli and places it gently on the lowest shelf—the "grandma shelf," as he calls it.

The Principle of the Third Shelf

Klaus clicks the remote. A dusty projector hums to life, showing a slide of a perfectly stocked yogurt shelf. "Slide four," Klaus says, his voice flat. "The Principle of the Third Shelf."

"No," he says. "Respect. Freshness is the result of respect. You respect the customer's time, you rotate stock. You respect the customer's body, you lower the shelf. You respect the customer's wallet, you put the discount pasta next to the premium sauce so they can choose." Klaus interrupts

Later that day, Mrs. Gartner returns. She walks slowly to the muesli aisle. She does not look up at the third shelf. She looks down. There it is. The Dinkel-Basis . She can reach it without straining. She puts three boxes in her cart.
