The team eats in near-silence. Bear meat, tough and greasy. Laura Lee prays under her breath. Van laughs too loud at nothing. Shauna sits apart, jaw tight, staring at Jackie — who hasn’t touched her portion.
“It fell over dead. Lottie stared at it and it dropped.” She looks around. “That doesn’t scare you?”
Van shifts uncomfortably. Travis’s hand hovers near the carving knife.
Misty Quigley crouches by the water, scrubbing blood from her hands. Behind her, the others are dragging the remains of the bear — the one Lottie “called” — toward the cabin. The air is cold but bright.
“Maybe we should thank ‘whatever’ did it.”
